Biweekly Update for May 12, 2026

President’s Message

Greetings fellow Master Gardeners. Congratulations to everyone who put so much work into the BCMGA Plant Sale for 2026! I dropped in at the PHS greenhouse a few days before the sale to take a look at the veggie collection, and as I scanned the space--with the plants all primped and ready for transport to the fairgrounds, I was literally awestruck at just how beautiful and healthy everything looked.

Our plants are truly next level—they reflect the enormous amount of expertise, meticulousness, care, and training that go into raising them. Kudos to everyone involved in bringing them to fruition, and particularly to those who pour their hearts and souls into them, year after year.

On the weekend of the sale, close to 140 volunteers were on hand to help. There was a great feeling of camaraderie and cheerfulness throughout the day, and this year lots of volunteers stayed to the very end to help clean up.

This year’s turnout was also excellent—over 300 customers were waiting in line for the opening. In all, more than 1,200 customers shopped in the Solar Barn and 900 customers visited the Floral Courtyard, purchasing in total over 7,000 plants!BCMGA Master Gardeners addressed many more plant questions than previous years, possibly because the atmosphere this year seemed a bit more relaxed: Customers seemed to come and go all day, rather than mostly in the morning. So while the annual sale indeed functions as a fundraiser for the association, there is a whole lot of plant education going on too.

The team is already gearing up and figuring out new cultivars to grow for next year. You can sign up for Friday sessions on SignUp Genius. Meanwhile, there are lots more ways to lend your green thumb through the summer—I’ll talk more about CGET and school gardens in the coming months.
