Karen's Garden

Karen Hopson, formerly of Garland Nursery, will be opening her home garden to members for a tour. She has

a hilly, drought tolerant garden in mostly full sun, with a shade garden on one side and a raised vegetable

garden. One of the main attractions of her garden is the metalwork by her husband Randy. You can tour the

garden and artwork at your leisure, and Karen will be available to answer questions. Because the garden is on

a hill, wear sturdy, comfortable shoes.

widened area to let cars pass. Also, please watch out for deer and chickens. Thanks!

Oregon State University Campus Arboretum

While we all rush to the OSU campus in the spring to see the magnolias and rhododendrons in bloom, we often forget the many plants across the OSU Campus Arboretum that radiate their beauty in the summer. Come join Dan Blanchard, Curator of Living Plant Collections as he guides us on a tour of woody plants with summer interest, highlights the history of the campus landscape, and discusses the current and future programs of the Campus Arboretum. Tour will start at the front of Dryden Hall (faces 30th Street). We suggest you wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a water bottle and snacks. The walking part of the tour will take about two hours (10:30am– 12:30pm).

  • Eight raised beds with a variety of annual vegetables

  • A raised bed designed for growing warm climate crops like sweet potatoes and melons

  • A "dry" bed for growing vegetables without the benefit of irrigation

Oak Creek Watershed Walk and Talk

Join us to learn how you can protect Oak Creek and other watersheds as a gardener! Dr. Sean Fleming will provide a little background about watershed hydrology, climate, and water quality while walking along Oak Creek, to help gardeners understand the environmental context they are working in. We will chat about what gardeners can do around conserving water quantity and quality and improving the ecological integrity of our watersheds. Dr. Fleming has over 20 years of experience in water resource science, project and program management, and environmental outreach. He published a trade book with Princeton University Press and has faculty appointments at Oregon State University and the University of British Columbia. He's also on the board of the Corvallis Sister Cities Association and travelled last fall to Ukraine to help build U.S. ties with environmental scientists there. He lives in Corvallis and has been a Benton County Master Gardener since 2019. He's lousy at growing vegetables but not bad with pollinator and wildlife gardens.
